There was an article on the BBC website in which one paragraph caught my attention, "In war, soldiers are immune from prosecution for murder. But the UK is not at war with the IS network - so the same immunity is not automatically available for counter-terrorism purposes."

I looked a bit deeper and found that the UK hasn't declared war on anybody since WWII, despite having been involved in conflicts like The Falklands and Iraq.  So my question is, if we've not been at war, what have we been at and what's the difference?

I think it’s a series of criteria you meet under the body of law known as international humanitarian law rather than declaring war in itself.

But often very tricky to determine when these rules apply, particularly in non -international armed conflicts (civil wars) where for example governments will launch air strikes on their own citizens or send tanks in to quash armed groups but flatly deny there’s a war in their country.

I believe don’t believe that the US has declared war on anyone since the end of ww2 either.

So this is the PC I'm thinking of putting together. Given there are others here more in the know with computery things I thought I should probably ask if there's anything glaringly wrong with this/changes people might suggest?

Do you really need the T1000-immobilising CPU cooler or the dedicated sound card.

I figured a decent cooler was worthwhile if I was going to be overclocking the CPU significantly. The sound card I wasn't sure about; I've always needed them before because the built in sound cards have always had problems with my speakers in the past but if I don't need it, then gravy.

I'm going to upgrade soon too - probably just CPU/motherboard/RAM though. I was going to get the Core i5-8400 rather than the Core i5-8600K based off this article:

https://www.rockpape...est-gaming-cpu/

I've never bothered overclocking in the past, I'm not sure if it's worth the effort.

Also I'm wondering if you are planning to overclock whether it's worth getting a better motherboard with inbuilt options? If you know what you're doing I guess it's probably fine though.

Cheers Tom.

I was looking at the 8400 too, though it's always been out of stock anywhere I've trusted (has anyone heard of or used Alzabefore?).

My i5-2500K is currently overclocked to 4.4GHz and it seems the 8600K can hit 5.0GHz, but yeah, if I could find the 8400 somewhere I might stick with that. the 8600K is on sale on Aria at the moment so it's maybe worth it.

Yeah, I was looking at that Alza website too. I've never used it either though. I'm not in a hurry though so I might wait a bit to see if it comes back in stock elsewhere (I normally use Scan).

Having read up a bit more I think I'll go for that mobo you initially chose paired with the 8400, as it's quite a bit cheaper than the higher end pair and I'm not planning on overclocking.

Yeah I tend to go Aria, eBuyer, or Overclockers. Scan has usually been a bit more expensive for whatever I'm looking at at the time. Now I'm looking at this Mobo.

Okay cool.

So just bought a large chunk of the bits off Aria:

i5 8600K -- £240
ASUS ROG Strix Z370-E Gaming MoBo -- £198
Corsair Vengeance Red LED 16GB DDR4@3200 -- £215
NZXT H440 case - £100
H60 CPU Watercooler - £67
3TB Seagate HDD- £75
Windows 10 - £86

All told, £990 including next day delivery. Just a PSU, graphics card, and SSD to get now thankfully.

That's a nice case, I haven't seen a new one that I've actually liked in years, they all look like they are trying to be Transformers or something. Although I'd prefer one without a window.

Apparently the Coffee Lake (8***) aren't performing too well compared to the last two generations even. Don't have a good idea of it myself, but if you can snag a Kaby Lake, you might be better off unless you're going to go big on the overclocking.

Oh. It looks like I missed the window on that advice for Strudel. Um. The differences are minuscule anyway.
