It is National Poetry day today and so, once again, I am launching the TCT RambleOn poetry competition. We had some excellent stuff being submitted last year and had a winner in Jentastic!

So let's do it again. You have 2 weeks to write (or dig up) and submit a poem. But don't do it yet, I will tell you all you need to know about submitting when the deadline approaches.

As per usual don't be afraid to write something - this is about the proliferation of poetry in general as well as having a crack at writing a good poem.

It will be independantly judged as last year and a prize awaits the winner!

PS. Theme is food this year but that doesn't have to affect what you write.
Ultimately 1337. Forever.

Here is my poem, poem is here, poem, poem, poem.

There's cold, dark custard in my shoe,
I simply do not know what to do,

On Sunday I tried to remove it,
But with no luck, it was stuck,

So I called to my Grandma to fetch a spoon,
But she was high and was dancing on the moon,

So I had to go to church that day with custard in my shoe,
It makes me sad, cos I don't know what to do...

I walked up to the priest squelching all the way,
He looked at me funny and gave me a look of dismay,

I told him it simply wasn't my fault,
He didn't care and gave me a colt, He said

'Go shoot yourself you worthless piece of scum'
But I couldn't, I just couldn't leave my Mum,

So I pointed the gun at Reverend Jones,
Pulled the trigger 5 times, he fell to the ground in groans,

'Why, Roy, why?' He said to me,
'Cos I have custard in my shoe, bitch, look can't you see?'

I hate writing poetry.

Hungry Joe and his Well Seasoned Limbs

I'm getting so, so hungry,
and the next meal is far away,
I'm really in a quite a quandry,
as to how to keep the wolves at bay.

For the fridge is empty,
and the cupboards are bare.
I can't eat my plenty,
As there is nothing there.

Strawberry jam and old courgette,
All that's left for me to eat,
But my appetite it does not whet,
What I wouldn't give for some meat

Only one thing left for me to do,
To stop the pangs and ease the pain.
Time to take off my sock and shoe,
As then there's less to nibble through.

Now I'm happy and my hunger sated,
But one complaint keeps hangin' round,
Now that the bleeding has abated,
I just can't stop falling down.

Those people commenting on it on DA are... well...

what do they know about poetry?

Did you get my poem okay, innoQnti? Just want to make sure, because I'm paranoid about my work going astray and missing deadlines :)

The time has come!!! The results are published!

The winner this year is Leon McComish with his excellent sonnet (pretty sure it is). Well done! I will contact you shortly to get an address for sending the prize. The prize is incidentally the "Poetry Please!" anthology - the most popular poems from the BBC Radio 4 programme of the same name.

The runner-up is last year's winner - Jenny Williamson (our beloved Jentastic!). Congratulations, I will also contact you for the runner-up prize of... Jaffa Cakes!

Third place was given to myself and I will contact myself to send myself a very nice hug.

Many thanks to Lynn Hallett for adjudicating.
